Accident Report

September 15, 2026, four people were reportedly injured after a semi-truck versus school bus accident early Tuesday on US 301.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened along southbound lanes of the highway near Desrosier Road, north of Dade City.

Investigators said that a school bus stopped along the highway with its flashing stop sign activated. A Hyundai Tucson stopped behind the bus. As the bus was letting students off, a semi-truck reportedly failed to control speed and crashed into the stopped vehicles.

Due to the collision, two people from the bus and two people from the Hyundai reportedly had minor injuries. Right now, the cause of the accident and potential charges are unconfirmed.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I’m going to say what I’m sure a lot of people are already thinking: Someone needs to check this truck driver’s cellphone data. Failing to see a big yellow bus up ahead on a flat highway during daylight hours almost guarantees that a driver’s eyes weren’t on the road. It wouldn’t at all be surprising if the same happened here.

To be clear, it is possible this was some highly unusual crash involving something unavoidable. That’s why I always expect accident investigations to at least rule out things like medical emergencies or vehicle defects. I’m certainly not suggesting anyone be blamed for a crash before there’s been a thorough look at the evidence. But if this crash is like far too many that have come across my desk, securing the phone records from this truck driver is likely to show that something like texting, watching videos, or using some other kind of app led to this crash. Ultimately, a proper investigation will say for sure, one way or the other.
