Accident Report
September 16, 2026, a student and a driver were injured following a school bus accident at 7:45 a.m. along West 15th Avenue.
Investigators said that the crash took place at the intersection of West 15th Avenue and Richard Gordon Hatcher Boulevard.
It appears that a Gary Community School Corp. bus was waiting at the light at the intersection. While doing so, a possible braking issue may have led to the bus rolling forward, and it crashed with a Toyota SUV.
Due to the crash, the bus driver and one of the students on the bus were taken to the hospital. Right now, further information about the cause of the crash remain under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
The possibility of brake issues raises two particular areas of concern. Most common is issues related to maintenance. Sometimes, vehicle owners fail to keep up with regular maintenance. That could be just plain negligence or it could be a deliberate risk intended to cut costs. If that were happening in a school district, that would be a huge deal that needs to be brought to light.
Less common, but equally worth attention, is the possibility of an unknown issue, possibly due to a defect. If a problem couldn’t have been avoided with regular inspections and maintenance, it could be that the issue traces back to the assembly line. That sort of thing takes particular training and tools to diagnose, though, so I would be surprised if authorities have been able to rule that out here.
Either way, it’s important for those affected by the crash and for parents who entrust their kids to the school district to get the full story. Making things right for those who were hurt is one thing. Making sure no one else gets hurt should also be a priority.
