Accident Report
September 13, 2026, a San Juan teen was injured following an 18-wheeler accident at around 4:42 p.m. along Interstate 2.
According to officials, the crash took place along eastbound lanes of the interstate near North Main Street. It appears that a 45-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman from San Juan were in a Chevy Equinox going along I-2. An 18-year-old man was in a Kenworth tractor-trailer also going eastbound. Authorities say that the truck made an unsafe lane change, crashing with the Equinox.
Due to the crash, the 18-year-old San Juan woman sustained serious injuries. No other injuries were reported. At this time, additional details about the crash are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities obviously believe a truck making an unsafe lane change led to this crash. Even if that’s true, it’s important to know why that mistake happened. What stands out to me, for example, is how young the truck driver is. Have authorities looked into the driver’s qualifications and training records? Could this crash have been avoided with a more experienced driver?
I recall a case I handled a while back where that was the cause of a serious truck wreck. As obvious as the truck driver’s mistakes were, we made sure to dig into his employment and his working environment. What we found were records of the driver’s training—or lack of training, really. The company hired a complete newbie, then rushed him through vital safety training in about half an hour. Mind you, this training would usually take place over multiple days with a co-driver. Instead, the company wanted trucks moving as soon as possible, safety be damned. Inevitably, this ridiculous oversight led to people getting hurt.
To be clear, that might not be what happened here. My point is that it’s something investigators should have already been looking into. At the end of the day, people don’t really want some “bad guy” to blame. They want to see accountability. If that means just one person faces consequences for an isolated mistake, then that’s what the evidence will show. But if a series of irresponsible and avoidable decisions ultimately culminated in this crash, the consequences should reflect that appropriately.
