While folks tend to think a crash like this is simple or straightforward, that’s usually not true. In fact, I get calls all the time from people who feel authorities mishandled the investigations into their accident. Single-vehicle wrecks just aren’t a high priority for a lot of departments, so it’s easy for them to overlook something that may not be immediately obvious.

For example, I handled a case not long ago involving someone who police alleged hadn’t been wearing their seatbelt. The family thought that was unlike the victim, so they wanted a second opinion. As it turned out, the victim had a defective seatbelt they didn’t even know about. It led to them being thrown from their seat despite wearing their safety belt properly. Had it not been for that unforeseen defect, the victim likely would have been fine, regardless of what actually caused the crash.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that happened here. My point is that people don’t often consider anything beyond a driver’s potential actions leading up to a crash. As important as those actions are, they’re just some of the many possible contributing factors a proper investigation should cover. That’s why I have to wonder if there’s more to this story that even those involved may not be aware of.
