How Did This Accident Occur?
At this point, it’s not clear what caused this crash. Did the truck fail to yield? Was the pickup speeding? Was one driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did either vehicle have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? These are the kind of questions that authorities must consider as they investigate this accident.
Investigators will pore over physical evidence, vehicle data, witness statements and available video footage to reconstruct this accident, while cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time. A qualified expert should examine the vehicles if authorities suspect a mechanical issue played a role in this crash.
Authorities also should look at the trucking company to determine if its driver was properly vetted and trained, or if the truck was overdue for any scheduled maintenance or repairs.
This investigation should give the pickup driver’s family a clear picture of what happened on U.S. 287.
