College Station, TX — December 9, 2024, Richard Leyva was injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at 3:02 a.m. along Highway 6.
According to initial details from authorities, the incident happened at the intersection of Highway 6/Earl Rudder Freeway and University Drive.
Authorities say that 65-year-old Richard Lorenzo Leyva was a passenger in a Jeep Grand Cherokee going southbound along Highway 6. At the intersection, it appears an oncoming Ford F-150 somehow crashed into the Jeep. Due to this, Leyva sustained serious injuries. There were no other confirmed injuries.
Right now, it’s alleged that the Ford driver had been drinking, and authorities recommended charges for DWI. No further information is available at this time.

While there isn’t a lot of information available here, people tend to assume any accident mentioning alcohol is going to be open-and-shut. After all, drunk driving is obviously wrong. However, I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and drunk drivers often have an accomplice who needs to be called out: a negligent alcohol provider.
Essentially, Texas law says alcohol providers, such as bars or restaurants, are unlawfully serving alcohol when they serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. This can expose those negligent alcohol providers to potential criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability if people are hurt or killed. Not only does that provide an opportunity to hold those alcohol providers accountable, but it can also get them to clean up their act before more people get hurt.
So while it’s not clear what all happened here, there’s enough information to suggest investigations should be rigorous to ensure any and all wrongdoers who had a role in the accident face appropriate consequences. Are those steps being taken?
