How Did This Accident Occur?

Over the last three decades in which I have been in this career, I have had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of intersection-related car accidents. Any investigation worth its salt will be looking into the possibility of driver error being behind the collision. Things like distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera will undoubtedly all be considered. I hope the investigators are also meticulous and openminded enough to consider less likely possibilities, as well, such as steering mechanism issues, brake problems, or tire failure.

Beyond that, I would be interested to know how well the safety features of the vehicles performed in the wreck. Did the airbags deploy correctly? Did the seatbelts function the way they were designed to? If things like that were faulty in any way, then it is possible that the victims’ injuries ended up being more severe than they should have been.

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get in-depth vehicle inspections done on the two vehicles. That’s what will be able to shed light on mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck or its outcome. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it took place. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—simply can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
