Accident Report
August 27, 206, Ranjan Avula and two others were injured due to a rollover car accident at approximately 1:00 a.m. along State Highway 14.
According to authorities, three people—48-year-old Ranjan Avula, a 47-year-old woman, and a 12-year-old boy—were traveling in a northbound Honda CR-V on Ellis Street in the vicinity southwest of F.M. 147 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Honda failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently overturned.
The 12-year-old boy reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Avula and the woman who had been a passenger in the Honda suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Many folks, when faced with single-car, rollover accidents that allegedly involve lane deviation, are quick to blame driver error without giving it much real thought. Personally, though, I’m not so quick to jump to conclusions. Why? Because I have been in this career for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation managed to unearth evidence of causes that were less likely. Sometimes things turn out to have been different than they initially appeared on the surface.
To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more information about this specific accident than is already available to the public. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was due to fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that the Honda’s lane deviation could hypothetically have been the result of something gone wrong with the vehicle itself. For example, what if it had been dealing with steering mechanism issues? Or perhaps it had a tire blowout? I do understand that these are not very likely scenarios, but that does not mean they shouldn’t at least be looked into before being ruled out.
On top of that, there is the fact that the Honda overturned. Not many are aware of this, but the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass do not actually do a very good job of simulating real-world scenarios. I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw with the CR-V contributed to the fact that it rolled. Why? Because the child’s injuries might not have ended up being so severe had the vehicle managed to remain safely upright.
An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to pinpoint any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaws that played a role in the wreck or its outcome. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get one done. That way the people affected by this accident will be given the clear answers based on solid evidence that they deserve. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
