Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If it’s true that alcohol contributed to the accident, that may not make things as open-and-shut as people would think. Not only is it important to know how intoxicated the driver was, but it’s also important to know if there’s a local alcohol provider complicit for unlawfully over-serving that driver.

Simply put, a lot of alcohol-related accidents involve people who were over-served by a bar or similar establishment. If an alcohol provider does so, they can potentially face criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, or liability if it results in people getting hurt. Not only does this provide an opportunity hold an alcohol provider accountable for their role in an accident, it can help get them to clean up their act before more people get hurt. That’s why I have to wonder if there’s more to this story than authorities have let on.
