With single-vehicle wrecks like this, people sometimes think investigations are more simple since there are fewer vehicles involved. But that’s not often true. It can surprise folks how often authorities rely on witnesses and statements from drivers to put together a story. If only one person is involved, though, they may not be in a condition to tell their side of the story right of the way. This is when things begin to slip through the cracks.
While officers generally try to follow up with injured parties after they’ve recovered enough to give a statement, some departments treat single-vehicle wrecks as a low priority. That can lead to officers being moved to work on other things, and the crash just eventually gets left behind. I’ve simply lost count of how many times victims and families came to me with reports that were left incomplete or where officers had to fill in the blanks with their best guess, and it ended up being wrong. Maybe a better effort is being made here to avoid that sort of haphazard investigation, but it would be far from the first time if getting the whole story here required more thorough independent investigations.
