How Did This Accident Occur?

After over three decades in this line of work, I have come to understand that these kinds of accidents are almost always more complex than most people might believe. There are several layers which investigators will need to pull back and examine in order to get to the bottom of things. Questions such as whether the motorcycle stopped or moving at the time of this crash? Was the truck driver distracted or fatigued? Or did the truck have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism?

Vehicle data, physical evidence, witness statements and available video footage should help investigators reconstruct this crash, but a qualified expert should examine the truck if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this accident. These kinds of inspections—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—can shed light on underlying mechanical malfunctions and/or product defects which might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

It might be prudent for investigators to also look into the trucking company to determine if the driver was adequately vetted and trained, whether he’d been pushed to stay on the road too long, or if the truck was overdue for any scheduled maintenance. After all, when everything is said and done, the loved ones left behind by the victim deserve a clear and detailed understanding of not just how the accident occurred, but also why. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
