Accident Report

September 14, 2026, one person was injured as the result of a semi-truck accident at around 12:15 p.m. along Interstate 80.

Authorities said in initial statements that the crash happened just east of Shelby along both directions of the interstate. According to reports, a semi-truck going westbound lost control and veered left. The truck then entered eastbound lanes of I-80, and it crashed with a Jeep driven by a 47-year-old Michigan man.

Due to the crash, reports say the Michigan man sustained non-critical injuries. Right now, details say a mechanical issue may have led to the truck losing control. This and other factors remain under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities apparently think this involved mechanical issues. Let’s say, for the sake of example, that turns out to be true. Some would take that to mean this crash was unavoidable. That’s not likely true, though. It’s certainly possible. I talk all the time about how frustrating it is when authorities completely ignore possible unavoidable mechanical issues leading to a crash. The only way to catch serious issues like manufacturing defects is through proper vehicle inspections. I would hope that happens here, as well.

To be quite blunt, though, the most common reason for mechanical issues is a lack of proper maintenance. And with commercial vehicles, that raises serious questions about who is supposed to be maintaining the truck and whether or not they knew there were potential issues that could have caused a crash like this. That, too, takes careful inspection of the truck to diagnose the issue, but it also means checking the company’s maintenance records and safety procedures. Is anyone doing that here? The sooner investigators move to secure evidence, the more evidence they’re likely to secure.
