How Did This Accident Occur?

Without more information, it might be tempting for some folks to just point the finger at the person who had been behind the wheel just because the wreck happened in the middle of the night and only involved one vehicle. While things like distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera could have been factors, I’m not willing to settle on the driver error conclusion without more information. Why? Because over the last three decades of my career, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation ended up uncovering evidence of less likely causes. Maybe that will be the case here as well.

By the way, I’m not trying to imply that I’m somehow privy to details about this accident that aren’t yet publicly available. I simply want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been a result of something gone wrong with the Mazda itself rather than driver error. For example, what it had been dealing with brake failure? Or perhaps its throttle was stuck in the open position somehow? Have tire blowouts or steering mechanism issues been considered? I do understand that these things are not very likely, but that does not mean they should automatically be ruled out without even being properly looked into.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done by qualified professionals would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that had a hand in the wreck which might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get one done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding of both how and why it occurred. That kind of clarity simply can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
