Accident Report
September 16, 2026, Katherine Theodore was injured due to a truck accident at approximately 8:00 a.m. along U.S. Highway 271.
According to authorities, 69-year-old Katherine Theodore was traveling in a southeastbound Buick Enclave on Gentry Parkway in the vicinity of the Hillsboro Street intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Buick attempted a lane change at an unsafe time. It was consequently involved in a sideswipe collision with a southeastbound Peterbilt 18-wheeler. The Buick apparently overturned over the course of the accident.
Theodore reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to side swipe car accidents involving unsafe lane changes, it’s not uncommon for some folks to make the assumption that they must have been caused by driver error. While things like distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera could have been factors here, I’m not willing to settle on the “driver error” conclusion without more information. Why? Because I have been in this line of business for over three decades. There have been plenty of cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of less likely causes. Maybe that will be the cases here, as well.
For the record, I’m not trying to imply that I somehow have more information about this accident than is available to the public. As far as I know, driver error does remain on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. Many newer models of cars are equipped with autonomous driving capabilities meant to assist the person behind the wheel. Was that the case for the Enclave? If so, did something malfunction that prevented it from preventing the collision with the truck?
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring issues like that—as well as any mechanical malfunctions or product defects—to light. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get one done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why it took place. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
