Accident Report
January 14, 2026, Kaelyn Quintanilla and one other were injured in a wrong-way car accident at 9:19 p.m. on Highway 123.
It appears the crash happened along southbound lanes of the highway near the Highway 46 merge.
Authorities said that 18-year-old Kaelyn Quintanilla was in a Ford Focus going southbound along the highway. A Volkswagen was apparently going the wrong-way against traffic. This led to the two vehicles colliding. Both Kaelyn Quintanilla and the woman from the Volkswagen were seriously injured.
Authorities recommended a charge against the Volkswagen driver for wrong-way driving. Right now, further specifics about the cause of the accident are unconfirmed.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Just to be clear up front, I can’t say for sure what happened here without seeing evidence from a complete accident reconstruction. That said, there is one factor that comes up after wrong-way collisions time and time again: alcohol. No doubt readers were thinking that very thing when they saw this was a wrong-way collision. However, even if that turns out to be what happened here, that might not make things so open-and-shut. It’s important to know why exactly alcohol leads to so many wrong-way collisions and why the wrong-way drivers aren’t always the only party that needs to face consequences.
Put simply, it takes a lot for a driver in their right state of mind to get on the wrong side of a highway without realizing it. If someone is not just intoxicated but extremely intoxicated, that can explain that severe lack of awareness. Drunk drivers who get to that point usually had help getting there from a server at a bar, restaurant, or other venue. According to Texas law, those providers can be held responsible if they over-served that driver while they were obviously intoxicated. And considering how drunk wrong-way drivers usually are, that’s virtually every crash like this involving a drunk driver coming from a local establishment.
Again, new information could come to light that shows alcohol was not a factor here. That said, I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases. I can’t recall a single wrong-way crash where it didn’t turn out that the wrong-way driver was coming from a local bar or other drinking establishment. If that happened here, as well, then there should be appropriate consequences.
