Accident Report
November 18, 2025, Joel Perez was killed as the result of a car accident which took place around 6:54 a.m. on County Road 314.
In initial statements, authorities said that 63-year-old Joel Perez was in a Toyota Corolla going westbound on CR-314. Another vehicle was apparently disabled in a lane of travel. The Toyota reportedly crashed into the disabled vehicle, and Joel Perez sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
Right now, additional details about the crash are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
If these reports are accurate, it seems pretty obvious that the crash happened because there was a vehicle disabled in a lane of travel, as authorities said. But there are two questions in particular that come to mind which need attention.
Firstly, why did the vehicle break down? Vehicles break down all the time. Sometimes, it’s just unavoidable. Tires may blow out due to road hazards or a sudden vehicle defect could occur. Other times, however, it is avoidable. Running out of gas, failing to properly maintain the car, commercial vehicles being handled improperly, etc. It’s important investigators distinguish which happened here.
Second, was the disabled vehicle clearly visible? At this time of day, a disabled vehicle on a narrow, rural road can cause serious problems. It’s important, if possible, for a vehicle operator to have their hazards on or otherwise have a way to visibly warn any approaching motorists of the obstruction. Failing to do so can be a serious mistake.
I’ve had cases where drivers simply had no way of avoiding blocking the road and couldn’t do anything to warn others. I’ve had cases where drivers broke down due to their own negligence and didn’t bother thinking about the danger they were putting others in. It’ll take more thorough investigations to say what all led to this crash. If anyone local to the area was on this road around when the crash happened, they may be able to provide some insight that the initial reports left out.
