How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to intersection-related accidents, many folks are quick to just blame driver error and move one. While things like fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera are often the driving force behind accidents like this one, I’m not ready to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because, after over three decades in this line of work, I’ve seen plenty of cases where thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of less likely causes. Who’s to say that wasn’t the case here, as well?
That’s not to imply that I have accident to details about this wreck that are not yet available to the public, by the way. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been caused by something gone wrong with one of the vehicles themselves rather than driver error. Maybe brake failure or throttle issues were a factor? Have tire failure or steering column problems been considered? While unlikely, these scenarios are not altogether impossible; they should at least be looked into before being ruled out.
I’d also be interested in knowing how well the safety features of the Mazda performed in the wreck. Did the airbags deploy correctly and in a timely manner? What about the seatbelt? Did it function the way that it was designed to? If these kinds of things were faulty, then it is possible the victim’s injured ended up being more serious than they should have been.
In-depth vehicle inspections would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck. Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get those done. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve more than the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
