How Did This Accident Occur?

This seems like a very simple question—how did the crash occur? It’s pretty much the first thing anyone thinks after reading about a crash. What may surprise folks, though, is just how often the authorities never bother to ask drivers this question after single-vehicle wrecks.

To be clear, I always say it’s up to the evidence to say what led to a crash. But part of any good investigation should be speaking with all witnesses and the drivers and passengers involved. With single-vehicle wrecks, though, I’ve had cases where a seriously injured driver was taken to the hospital, and authorities just never bothered to follow up with them. Instead, they assumed the driver must have done something wrong and centered their investigations around that assumption.

It’s entirely possible this crash has been handled professionally and carefully. I’d never tell people to outright doubt an official investigation. Rather, it’s important that people have a chance to at least give their side of the story. That way, they and their loved ones can at least feel assured the investigations were fair, whatever answers they may ultimately come up with.
