Regardless of what happened here, it’s important that investigators cover all possibilities. Sometimes, the preliminary investigations are too narrow in scope, and they can miss crucial details. That’s why it can help to follow up early and often.
Are officials pulling phone records? Securing data from the vehicles? Inspecting those vehicles for defects? Is there a history of crashes on this stretch of road? Did a nearby home or business have a video camera with a view of the road? Are there independent witnesses?
If nothing else, families deserve to know they’re getting the full story, and victims deserve to know the facts are being told fairly. If it ever seems like authorities aren’t taking the steps to see that happen, that’s when independent investigators may need to step in.
