Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s no surprise that when a truck driver is seriously injured in a two-vehicle wreck, it turns out the other vehicle was also a commercial vehicle. That’s why it can get under my skin when people see that I’m a lawyer and automatically assume I’m “anti-trucker”. What they don’t consider is just how many of my clients over the years have themselves been truckers.

One of the biggest risks professional drivers face is other, less responsible commercial vehicle drivers. Just about any experienced trucker will attest to the fact they’ve worked with or known another driver that just didn’t belong behind the wheel. Those drivers give the profession—an incredibly important and difficult one already—a bad reputation. Not only that, but they can get people seriously hurt or killed. So when I read about an accident like this one, I can’t help wondering what exactly went wrong. Was it something unusual that a commercial driver might not be able to foresee or avoid? Or, was the crash yet another example of a hard worker being injured by someone who doesn’t respect the standards the professionals around them live up to every day?
