Accident Report
September 14, 2026, a Houston man and others were injured following a bus accident around 5:35 a.m. along Interstate 335.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened along the Kansas Turnpike near the Emporia Service area, north of Emporia near State Highway 99.
According to officials, a commercial bus was going along the interstate when authorities believe the bus driver fell asleep. The bus then ran off-road where it crashed along the shoulder.
Due to the crash, authorities say two passengers were taken to the hospital. Reports identified them as a 34-year-old Houston man and a 21-year-old Kansas City, MO, woman. Others on the bus may have been injured, but there didn’t appear to be anyone else transported from the scene.
Right now, factors leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I just recently read about another crash that appeared to involve a bus driver falling asleep behind the wheel. The challenges of driving coach buses versus local transit are quite different, but a lot of the possible root causes overlap.
Was the driver not managing their time and sleep schedule well enough? Was their employer pressuring them to break the rules and drive long hours? Did this involve a medical condition of some sort? Have there been incidents like this in the past, either with this driver or the bus company?
The challenge is that these kinds of accidents too often slip through the cracks because authorities just blame the driver and move on. Even if the driver made a mistake, though, there could be more going on behind the scenes that the victims deserve to know about—and that they deserve to know will be addressed appropriately. So if I were involved in a crash like this, and I’d want to know that investigators were asking these same questions.
Does anyone know more about this story? Has anyone else been on a bus with a sleepy driver? Let me know in the comments.
