Accident Report
August 21, 2026, Harlan Bias was injured due to a single-car accident just before 7:45 a.m. along State Highway 288.
According to authorities, 50-year-old Harlan Bias was traveling in a southbound Ford F-150 pickup truck on S.H. 288 at County Road 51 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the pickup failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a median barrier.
Bias reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Some folks are quick to assume that single-car accidents involving lane deviations must be due to driver error. As far as I know, things like fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera could have been factors; but I’m not willing to settle on the driver error conclusion without more information. Why? Because over the thirty years in which I’ve been in this career I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation ended up uncovering evidence of less likely causes.
That’s not to imply I know more about this accident than is already known to the public, by the way. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the pickup’s lane deviation could have been a result of something like a steering mechanism malfunction or tire blowout. Many newer models of vehicles are equipped with autonomous driving capabilities, too. Was that the case here? Did the pickup truck’s computer take over when it shouldn’t have? Or was it maybe the other way around, failing to take action when it was actually needed?
An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or computer issues that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get one done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve more than the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
