How Did This Accident Occur?
When a driver hits a construction worker in the middle of the afternoon, my first suspicion is they may have been looking at their phone. The fact the person hit was the one flagging down vehicles only makes that suspicion stronger. However, any accident in a construction zone should raise questions beyond just what a driver does and into the construction zone itself.
For example, I’ve been a part of many investigations into job sites where the working conditions contributed to a resulting accident. If a work zone is not properly marked, if traffic is diverted in a dangerous way, or if workers aren’t given proper equipment, it’s possible that a worker ultimately killed in an accident was actually in danger the moment they showed up to work that day.
Likely or not, I would be at least concerned if investigators weren’t looking into those factors. A family losing a loved one in an accident like this deserves to know they’re getting the full story. That might not happen if investigations only focus on the driver involved in the accident.
If anyone passed by the construction zone, did anything unusual stand out? Or, does it seem like this all comes down to a single reckless driver? Share your thoughts in the comments.
