How Did This Accident Occur?

I bet most people reading about this crash assume that the driver who allegedly ran the stop sign is at fault, and that’s the end of the matter. What if a mechanical defect caused the driver’s brakes to fail? What if the stop sign was removed? (If that sounds far-fetched, I once litigated a case where a construction crew caused a crash by failing to replace a stop sign.) What if the driver had a medical emergency?

This isn’t me being a stereotypical lawyer who is trying to make a simple situation complex. Crash investigations aren’t just important for telling us what happened, but also because they rule out what did not happen. Particularly in a case like this, where a law enforcement officer appears to be one of the victims, it might make sense for an independent investigator to look at the matter, just to allay any suspicions about the results. That’s my two cents. Tell me what you think.
