The woman, 56-year-old Dionne Brown, died after being transported to a nearby hospital, according to authorities.

How Did This Accident Occur?

At this point, all we know about this crash is that the woman in the wheelchair supposedly was not in a crosswalk when she tried to cross the street. That doesn’t tell us much about why this crash happened.

Was the area well lit? Was the pickup driver distracted or fatigued? Did the pickup have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? Authorities should consider questions like this as they investigate this crash, so they can get to the truck of what happened on Ann Arbor Avenue.

Investigators will work to reconstruct this accident by poring over physical evidence, vehicle data, witness statements and available video footage, while cell phone records could show if the pickup driver was texting or interacting with an app at the time. Those records also could help track the pedestrian’s movements.

If authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash, a qualified expert should examine the pickup before it is repaired or scrapped. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, but the woman’s family deserves to know as much as possible about this accident.
