Accident Report
September 14, 2026, a De Berry man and one other were injured following a dual truck accident around 9:20 a.m. on US Highway 80.
Preliminary information about the accident says that it happened east of Marshall at the intersection of US 80 and Farm-to-Market 2199.
According to officials, a 50-year-old De Berry man was in a Mack truck going northwest on the highway. A 49-year-old man was in an International semi-truck going southeast. Authorities say that the International semi made an unsafe turn, and the trucks collided.
Due to the accident, the De Berry man sustained serious injuries. The International semi-truck driver had moderate injuries. Authorities recommended citing that driver for allegedly turning when unsafe.
Additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities say an unsafe turn led to this crash. That’s usually a result of inattentive driving, which is why I always expect accident reconstructions to dig into cellphone data as early as possible. It’s not generally something trucking companies or drivers hand over willingly, so it might take a court order to accomplish that.
That said, distraction is just a common factor, and it’s not always the root cause of the crash. Sometimes, it’s a symptom of a more serious problem. For example, I recall a case from a while back where a truck driver crashed while texting with his supervisor. As we dug into the company’s practices, we found that the supervisor would constantly call and text drivers all throughout the day. If they drivers didn’t respond right away, they risked losing their jobs. Naturally, this would lead to drivers risking using their phone while driving rather than risking their livelihood. People inevitably got hurt as a result.
Maybe nothing like that happened here. My point is that it’s always important to get the full story and focus on gathering clear evidence. If investigations just stopped at the first sign of a mistake, the real problems leading to a crash might simply continue unchecked. Hopefully investigations into this crash are going beyond the surface so there can be appropriate consequences.
