How Did This Accident Occur?

People tend to be quick to assume single-vehicle accidents always involve driver error. That’s certainly common, and it’s worth investigating those possibilities. But if investigators ignore less likely, potentially unavoidable factors, they might overlook something important.

For example, have authorities inspected the victim’s vehicle for potential defects? This can include faulty tires, brakes, steering columns, electrical systems, and even software problems with any lane assistance, automatic driving, and crash avoidance systems. I rarely see authorities look into those things on their own. We usually have to have independent specialists with proper training and tools rule out those kinds of factors.

Likely or not, this is an example of something a proper accident reconstruction should look into. Even when there are more common possible factors to consider, letting something slip through the cracks just because no one bothered to look into it would just be irresponsible.
