How Did This Accident Occur?
Finding out the cause of a single-vehicle crash can present some unique challenges folks don’t always consider. While a lot of people assume it’s just as easy as finding out what the driver did wrong, it can actually be directly harmful to an investigation to jump to the conclusion the crash was avoidable. Let me explain.
One of the reasons I get so many calls about single-vehicle wrecks in particular is people aren’t sure if they can trust the authorities. They might feel police are more concerned with looking for blame than actually doing a fair, unbiased investigation. As a matter of fact, that can happen. Case in point, I had a crash not long ago where authorities were adamant a driver wasn’t wearing their seatbelt. Through our independent investigations, though, we found clear evidence the seatbelt actually failed due to a defect.
These kinds of oversights are unfortunately common, which is why I always take what police say with a few grains of salt. It’s certainly possible for authorities to do good, thorough investigations. But it’s ultimately up to the evidence to say what happened. So if authorities can present extensive, clear evidence, they’ve likely done good work. However, it clear evidence is lacking, there could be more to the story that needs attention.
