Situations like this can be a lot more complex than folks may realize. Obviously, finding the suspect is a top priority, so hopefully authorities can continuing putting information out to the public that helps someone connect the dots. But even if that happens, there may still be the issue investigating the employer and what steps, if any, could have prevented this.

Simply put, Texas law says employers owe a basic duty to their employees to ensure a safe workplace. For example, if a business is in an area with a high violent crime rate, employers will owe a higher duty to provide reasonable security than a business would in an area with little to no reported crime. If a business fails to take reasonable steps to protect employees, they could be responsible for resulting harm.

What steps the employer here did or could have taken isn’t for me to say without seeing more evidence. My point here is that as understandable as it is to focus on accused criminals in these situations, there must also be consideration for what steps victims and their families can take going forward.
