Authorities reported that people were in an apartment when one person was taking pictures with and handling a rifle. While doing so, the man allegedly fired the rifle, and he allegedly shot another man in the back. That man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Current reports say that Lubbock Police arrested the man for aggravated assault. The incident remains under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I can’t speak with any specificity about this particular accident. However, everyone should know that if you follow the four rules of gun safety, this sort of thing will not happen. Those four rules are:

  • Rule #1: All guns are always loaded. Period.
  • Rule #2: Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
  • Rule #3: Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
  • Rule #4: Be sure of your target, what’s beyond it, and what’s in front of it.

When you don’t follow one or more of these rules, people can get hurt or killed. I’d be surprised if anything different led to this accident, but that all depends on what the evidence says.
