Accident Report

Blythe, CA — September 25, 2026, Alfonso Torres, Francisco Mendoza and Christopher Guatemala were killed in a truck accident at about 5:15 a.m. on Interstate 10/Redlands Freeway.

Authorities said an eastbound semi-truck hit a crash truck and two other vehicles in a construction zone east of Intake Boulevard. Three construction workers also were struck in the collision.

All three workers — Coachella residents Alfonso Vega Torres, 50, and Christopher Benevidez Guatemala and Tonapah, AZ resident Francisco Morales Mendoza, 39 — died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to authorities.

The truck driver, a 44-year-old Redlands man, was hospitalized with severe injuries after the crash, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Riverside County accident at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Was the truck driver distracted or fatigued? Did the truck have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? Was the construction zone laid out to give semi-trucks or other large vehicles enough room pass through? The questions should help authorities piece together what happened on this stretch of Redlands Freeway.

Investigators will work to reconstruct this crash by poring over vehicle data, physical evidence, witness statements and available video footage, while cell phone records could show what the truck driver was doing at the time.

Authorities should look at trucking company records to determine if the driver was adequately vetted and trained and whether the truck was overdue for any scheduled maintenance or repairs.

The construction company warrants similar scrutiny to see if the site had a valid safety plan to protect workers.

This investigation should answer any lingering questions there grieving families have about this accident.
