Accident Report
September 12, 2026, Adan Salazar was killed and Raul Salazar Miramontes was injured in a truck accident just before 8:30 p.m. on U.S. 287.
According to authorities, two people—44-year-old Raul Salazar Miramontes and 18-year-old Adan Salazar—were traveling in a northwestbound Ford F-250 pickup truck on U.S. 287 in the vicinity northwest of County Road 3 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the pickup entered the shoulder of the highway. There, it was involved in a rear-end collision with the back of a parked Freightliner 18-wheeler’s trailer.
Salazar reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident. Salazar Miramontes suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports; he was transported to an area medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to rear-end accidents, many folks are quick to point the finger at the person behind the wheel of the striking vehicle without much additional thought, if any. While that is certainly one possibility here, I’m not ready to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because after over three decades in this career, I’ve seen plenty of similar truck accident cases where evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed through thorough investigation. Maybe that will be the case here, as well.
To be clear, I’m not trying to imply that I have more details about this specific accident than are already available to the public. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the pickup itself to cause the lane deviation and subsequent rear-end collision rather than driver error. Maybe it was dealing with a steering mechanism problem? Or perhaps it had a tire blowout? I am well aware that these scenarios are less than likely, but that does not mean they should automatically be ruled out without any proper consideration.
An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to uncover any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that had a hand in the accident so that they don’t go unnoticed. Hopefully, the authorities are being meticulous and openminded as they investigate. However, should their work seem shortsighted, a third-party investigation can always take a look, as well. It never hurts to have a second perspective go over things in order to ensure nothing important falls through the cracks inadvertently. After all, when everything is said and done, the loved ones left behind by the victim deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. The vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
