Reading Time: 2 minutes

A crash between a 2022 Peterbilt semi and a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan injured two people on Wednesday. Authorities reported that the collision occurred around noon at the intersection of US Highway 63 and Minnesota Highway 16 in Frankford Township. The Dodge, driven by 57-year-old Lola Anita Anderson of Spring Valley, was allegedly struck in the intersection. Anderson and her passenger, 58-year-old Sharon Denise Littlejohn of Spring Valley, both sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

When crashes at intersections involve semi-trucks, one of the first questions investigators must answer is which driver had the right-of-way. Large commercial vehicles have longer stopping distances and less maneuverability, which makes determining the flow of traffic and the timing of entry into the intersection a critical part of the investigation.

Right-of-Way Considerations

The rules of the road place significant responsibility on commercial truck drivers when approaching intersections, especially when traffic control devices like stop signs or signals are present. If the semi failed to yield, that could explain why the smaller vehicle entered the intersection and was struck. Investigators will need to carefully analyze traffic signal data, driver statements, and eyewitness accounts to determine who was legally entitled to proceed.

Were Distraction or Fatigue Factors?

Authorities will also likely examine whether distraction or fatigue may have played a role in this crash. A driver who is momentarily inattentive may miss critical visual cues, such as traffic approaching from a crossroad. Fatigue, in particular, can impair reaction times and judgment, and because it often builds gradually, drivers may not realize how impaired they have become. Determining whether the semi driver was alert and attentive at the time is an important part of understanding what led to this collision.

Evidence That Should Be Collected

To clarify the cause, investigators will likely examine the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the semi to determine its speed and braking activity just before impact. Physical evidence such as skid marks and vehicle damage patterns will also help reconstruct the sequence of events. Traffic cameras or nearby surveillance footage could prove invaluable in determining which driver entered the intersection lawfully.

Why a Full Investigation Is Critical

The outcome of this case hinges on determining which party had the right-of-way and whether mechanical problems or driver inattention played any role. A detailed investigation will provide clear answers about what happened and why, ensuring accountability and helping those affected move forward with an accurate understanding of the events.
