Lawsuit or Suit: A court action brought by the plaintiff, against the defendant, seeking compensation for an injury or enforcement of a right.
Leading Case: A case regarded as having determined the law on a particular point, thus becoming a guide for later decisions.
Legal Cause: A substantial factor in bringing about the harm (proximate cause).
Legal Fees: Legal fees are the amount that an attorney is paid for representing a client.
Liability: An obligation that one is bound in law to perform.
Liable: Legally responsible.
Lien: A legal claim against another person's property as security for a debt.
Litigant: A party to a lawsuit.
Litigation: A civil action brought before a court in which the plaintiff, seeks a legal remedy. One or more defendants respond to the plaintiff's grievance and to either agree to compensate the plaintiff or they will choose to defend themselves and their actions to avoid compensating the plaintiff.
Litigation Expenses: This is the amount that an attorney pays up front to pursue a legal action on behalf of the client. Some examples include court costs, expert witness fees, court reporters fees, accident reconstruction specialists fees, etc. In most cases the litigation expenses are moderate to non-existent, but in some cases, certain experts must be hired in order to help prove up the case.
Loss of Consortium: This is a form of damages that refers to the loss of interaction between the plaintiff and a loved one caused by the defendants actions. For example, if the victim of an accident dies the victims spouse may seek compensation for the loss of affection that they have endured.
Lost Wages: This is a form of damages that refers to any wages or salary (including future income) that the plaintiff did not receive because they were kept from performing their normal work duties due to the accident.
