Actos Drug and Its Use
Actos is a pharmaceutical drug that is used to treat type 2 diabetes. Actos works by making the cells and the hormones that are produced by the pancreas (insulin) become more sensitive to each other. Actos is an oral tablet that is usually taken once a day. This drug can be taken with or without food. Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and was put on the market in 1999. During this time and later, Actos was noted as one of the best and leading type 2 diabetes drug on the market because it replaced the drug Avandia, which was causing increased heart problems.
FDA Warnings for Those Using Actos
By taking this medication you can experience heart problems, blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did a study on Actos and determined that it was causing people to suffer from bladder cancer, or it was causing an increase of bladder cancer in patients. In June 2011, the FDA made an announcement stating that if Actos has been taken for a year or more then you have a high risk of bladder cancer. In August 2011, the FDA also mentioned that the increase risk of bladder cancer was going to be added to the warnings and precautions section of the drug. The FDA also provided instructions to the healthcare professions on how to administer Actos to their patients.
What are the Symptoms of Bladder Cancer?
The cancer begins in the cells of the bladder that make up the inner lining of the bladder. The cancer is in the form of a tumor that develops in stages. The most common symptoms of bladder cancer are bleeding and pain during urination, frequent urinary tract infections, pain in the kidneys, growth near the bladder, and weight loss. Bladder cancer can also lead to death if not detected early.
Treatment of Bladder Cancer
Treatment of bladder cancer depends on the stage of the cancer. If bladder cancer is detected early, surgery is possible to remove the cancer. However, if the cancer has spread rapidly, chemotherapy and radiation can be given in an attempt to destroy the cancerous cells. Radiation does not always have to be performed with chemotherapy but often times it is done together to help the chances of destroying majority of the cancer cells.
